Nine people were killed when a residential house collapsed as a result of an explosion on the Russian island of Sakhalin, at noon on Saturday.
Russia Today channel quoted a source in the Al-Jazeera Emergency Situations Directorate as saying that preliminary investigations indicate that the cause of the explosion in a residential building in the Timovskoye area was a 20-liter gas cylinder.
The source added, “According to the preliminary results of the investigation, a 20-liter gas cylinder exploded. This explosive was found on the balcony.”
The source pointed out that the rules of industrial security and occupational safety prevent storing and placing containers and cylinders of this size in residential buildings, and it is not allowed to use there except for five-liter containers only.
