At least one person was killed and 12 others were missing after an explosion destroyed an apartment building in Saint Helier, the capital of the British island of Jersey.
And the local channel “ITV” reported that “at least one person was killed, and 12 others were missing, as a result of an explosion that destroyed a building containing apartments.”
Officers cordoned off much of St Helier, in Jersey, one of the Channel Islands, and urged citizens to stay away from the area around Mount Bingham.
The explosion was heard across the island, with a large plume of smoke visibly rising from the Mount Bingham area.

Robin Smith, Jersey Police Chief, said in a press statement, “Following the explosion that occurred this morning in the Haut du Mont area, Pierre Road, a number of residents are still missing, and emergency services are working to search for them at the scene.” .
An unnamed police spokesman was quoted by ITV as saying: “Officers are working to ensure that anyone who has lost their home has a place to stay overnight.”
Regarding the cause of the explosion, the Jersey gas supplier, Island Energy, said: “At this stage, there is no confirmation of the cause of the explosion.”
