European Union Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Oliver Varhelyi said on Tuesday that the Union’s public affairs ministers agreed that Bosnia and Herzegovina should become an official candidate to join the bloc.
He added, “Today we reached a pivotal event. The road to the European Union is open!”
It is expected that the leaders of the European Union will endorse the recommendation of the ministers at its summit to be held next Thursday.
Candidate prescription is the first step in the long process of joining the European Union.

After granting the state the status of a candidate, accession negotiations begin in the following stages, provided that the conditions are met, and accession negotiations can take years to begin.
