German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Tuesday asked his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to use his influence over Russia to help end the war in Ukraine.
This came in a phone call between the leaders of the two countries that lasted for one hour, according to a statement issued by the German Bellevue Palace.
The statement indicated that the two leaders exchanged views on current international issues and challenges during the call.
“President Steinmeier stressed the common interest of Europe and China in ending the war in Ukraine, respecting Ukrainian sovereignty and the withdrawal of Russian forces,” the statement read.

President Steinmeier asked his Chinese counterpart to use his influence on Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the war, according to the statement.
On February 24, Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine, followed by international rejection and economic sanctions on Moscow, which requires Kyiv to abandon plans to join military entities to end its operation, which the latter considers an “interference” in its sovereignty.
